Research Interest: Biochemical Diabetology
Dr. D. Ragoobirsingh's research examines the effects of nitric
oxide released from nitrosovasodilators on the plasma glucose levels
and the insulin binding activity of erythrocytes and leucocytes.
Organic nitrates are nitrosovasodilatory drugs used to relieve angina
pectoris and myocardial ischaemia. These organic nitrates act to
produce smooth muscle relaxation that results in dilation of veins,
arteries and arterioles by the release of nitric oxide.
Patients on protracted treatment with these drugs may well be at
risk for developing Diabetes mellitus. The findings of these investigations
may well serve to protect many from the onset and complications
of drug induced diabetes mellitus. In addition, his research team
is also looking at food extracts used in the treatment of diabetes
in folklore medicine. Efforts are being made to determine whether
these actually effect changes in glucose metabolism and the possible
molecular mechanisms by which they illicit their action.
Dr. Ragoobirsingh consults locally to the Diabetes Association
of Jamaica and the University of the West Indies Diabetes Outreach
Project; and internationally to the International Diabetes Federation,
with Head Office in Brussels. All his research and professional
pursuits are focused on increasing understanding of Diabetes mellitus
and its complications with a view to improve the quality of care
given, and ultimately the life, to diabetics |
