Arrangements for Teaching and Assessments at the Western Jamaica Campus

07 November, 2025

We are aware that apart from the damages to the physical infrastructure at the Mona – Western Jamaica Campus, there is currently no electricity, water and internet services. We are also aware that this is the reality throughout many communities in Western Jamaica. Given the extent of the impact of the hurricane on utility services, this situation is likely to subsist into the immediate future. Consequently, it will not be possible to conduct teaching and learning activities in any format.

After deliberations, the UWI-Mona Management has agreed to suspend all classes at WJC for the remainder of this semester. It is proposed to complete teaching for Semester One 2025-2026 between January 5 – 16, 2026, and thereafter assessments will follow. This will likely impact the commencement of Semester Two 2025-2026 at WJC.

We are further proposing, subject to the agreement of the Nursing Council of Jamaica, to bring all Final Year Nursing students to the Mona Campus to complete the remainder of Semester One. The Campus will accommodate these students residing on our halls of residence at no cost to the student.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the time-table for the restoration of utility services to Western Jamaica, we will communicate any variation to the position outlined above.

In the meanwhile, we continue to support our staff and students in the recovery process.
