Clinical Departments

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Child Health, headed by Dr. H. Fletcher, offers clinical raining for the MB,BS programme and graduate programmes in O&G and child health. This department is nvolved in research including In Vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, perinatal service, HIV in pregnancy and infectious diseases, among others.


The Department of Community Health & Psychiatry, headed by Professor D. Eldermire-Shearer, offers undergraduate and postgraduate training in community health and psychiatry and is actively engaged in manages the a number of community outreach activities. This department also University of the West Indies HIV/AIDS programme which is a regional programme involved in research and training in the area of patient care for HIV/AIDS. The section of Psychiatry is involved in numerous national policymaking endeavours with respect to mental health care in the region.


The Department of Medicine, headed by Professor Michael Lee, provides clinical training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in Internal Medicine with subspecialties in Gastroenterology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology and Nephrology. The department is research centered with research emphasis in the following areas: cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, gastroenterology, neurology, diabetes, renal disease and systemic lupus erythematosus. The Faculty of the Department of Medicine provides outreach services to rural areas and is closely associated with several volunteer organizations.


The Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Emergency Medicine, headed by Professor Newton Duncan, provides clinical training in the undergraduate and graduate programmes in the areas of surgery, radiology and anaesthesia. This department is involved in research, including breast disease, gastric cancer, prostrate cancer and orthopaedic conditions. It also provides critical service to the University Hospital of the West Indies. Faculty of this department provide ward rounds and surgical consultations to rural hospital as part of its outreach service to the island.
