Health Care and Insurance

The University Health Centre is located on the Campus and caters to all registered students. Optical and Dental care are also provided under the Health Scheme. The University Hospital of the West Indies which adjoins the Campus, offers a wide range of services including emergency services. General Insurance is provided for students registered at the Mona Campus. Students who require comprehensive medical insurance must make their own arrangements.

Extra-Curricula Activities

All registered students are members of the Guild of Students which is the registered association of students of the University. We urge you to take an active part in the Guild’s activities while you are at Mona. Other activities in which you may participate are sports, various clubs and societies, the Leadership Programme and many other cultural and civic activities which takes place on and off campus during the year. Your participation in such activities will assist the enhancement of your cultural experiences.

During your stay, you might be asked to give a presentation on your own university or country at our Study Abroad Fair which is held during the month of November. Our students would love to hear from you about your “home” university before making a decision on where to go on exchange. Material for display and distribution is provided to assist in your presentation.

Place of Worship

TThere are several places of worship in the areas surrounding the campus. The University Chapel is situated on the campus in close proximity to the main entrance on Mona Road. The Chapel holds services for several denominations during the semester, including an Anglican mass at 7:30 a.m. and a non-denominational service at 9:00 a.m. Regular Mass is Anglican each Sunday. Churches situated near the campus include: Acquinas Centre (Roman Catholic) just across from the hospital, Mona Baptist Church in Papine, Hope United Church and Church of the Ascension (Anglican) in Mona Heights and St. Margaret’s Church (Anglican) on Old Hope Road between Papine and Liguanea, and Providence Methodist Church in Liguanea.

Libraries

The UWI, Mona Library boasts a modern library system consisting of:

  • The Main Library, featuring collections in Humanities, Education, and the Social Sciences (including Law)
  • The Medical Branch Library, with collections in Medicine and Nursing
  • The Science Branch Library, with collections in Pure and Applied Sciences and Pre-Clinical Medicine

The Main and Medical Branch Libraries are open 22 hours daily on weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays, and noon to 8:00 p.m. on Sundays. You can also access material electronically from the comfort of your room (or from wireless campus hotspots) using your student ID. Internet access is widely available in the libraries to enhance your research requirements. lean more

Restaurants on Campus

Concessionaries provide cafeteria services in locations at Mary Seacole Hall, Taylor Hall and A. Z. Preston Hall on a daily basis. read more

Banks

There is a Cashless Branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) and a branch of the National Commercial Bank (NCB) on Campus.

There are also ATMs on Campus, which are operated by both banks. All major credit cards are accepted and can be used to transact business in Jamaica. The Jamaican Dollar is the currency used locally; however, the exchange rate varies. Traveler’s cheques attract a more favorable rate of exchange

Security

Campus Security is covered by specific legislation, namely the Mona Campus Security Act of 2007. It gives powers to the police and private security providers on Campus to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Act. There is a police post on Campus. Activities such as vending, taxi access and parking are strictly regulated by the University, and everyone on Campus is subject to search. An escort service is provided for individual students or small groups working in the libraries, laboratories or any other on-Campus centre at nights. A uniformed guard can escort you to your hall. Click to view website

Shopping

There are several major shopping areas in Kingston located in Half Way Tree, New Kingston, Liguanea, Manor Park and Downtown Kingston. Sovereign Centre, Liguanea Lane and Hilo Plaza, located in Liguanea, are closest in proximity to the Campus and have a wide variety of shops, goods and services. The Papine Market is located north of the Mona Campus and provides a wide assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables Monday to Saturday.

Transportation

Residents of the Corporate Area are served by a variety of modes of transportation. The Jamaica Urban Transport Company (JUTC) operates a fleet of large buses which ply between residential suburbs and commercial centres of Kingston and St. Andrew. There are also several privately owned and operated vehicles, as well as registered taxis which can be hired via the telephone. The UWI also has a bus which plies between the campus and Liguanea.
