Installation, Sir George Alleyne, Chancellor of The University of the West Indies

A small exhibition celebrating the installation of our new Chancellor, Professor, The Honourable Sir George Alleyne is currently mounted in the Catalogue Hall of the Main Library. It highlights the procedure for his appointment, the criteria for selection, as well as his role as Chancellor. Also included are the Chancellor’s curriculum vitae, list of publications and selected books and articles and his installation address. The new Chancellor was installed at the Cave Hill Campus on Saturday, December 13, 2003. The exhibition will run until Saturday, January 12, 2003.

Exhibition: "UWI Lecturer receives International award"
Mr Rafi Ahmad, Lecturer, Department of Geology has received an international award for studies on natural hazards in Jamaica from the United Nations. The exhibition is currently mounted in the Science Library, and will continue until November 21, 2003.

Exhibition: "Ceramics Through the Ages from Taino to Contemporary"
To celebrate Heritage Week, the Library has an exhibition "Ceramics Through the Ages from Taino to contemporary". This exhibition is mounted by Norma Rodney Harrack, a Master of Arts student in History (Heritage Studies) and will run from October 13 - 31, 2003 in the Catalogue Hall, Main library.

The Library now has a subscription to BIOMED Central is primarily a electronic publishing platform for scientists. There are over 50 journals published in electronic format by BIOMED. These tiles begin with BMC.

The Sovereignty of the Imagination: The Writings and Thoughts of George Lamming
The Sovereignty of the Imagination: The Writings and Thoughts of George Lamming is the title of an exhibition in the Catalogue Hall of the Main Library. It was mounted to coincide with the Conference by the same name held at the University of the West Indies, Mona 5-7, 2003 to honour George Lamming on the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of In the Castle of My Skin.

The exhibition which gives much insight into Lammming’s life and works includes various editions of In the Castle of My Skin and comments about the work. It also includes copies of his other novels, essays and speeches, sample of works of critical appreciation, theses, articles, papers and videos. In recognition of his great contribution to literature, scholarship and dialogue on Caribbean issues, Lamming is the recipient of many awards which are also included in the exhibition. In 2000 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the City University of New York on the occasion of its 154th Commencement Exercises and at the opening of the conference in his honour he was invested as a Fellow of the Institute of Jamaica.

Child Labour Exhibition

An exhibition on Child Labour is currently on, in the Catalogue Hall, Main Library from April 2 - 16, 2003.
It includes 14 books on Child Labour which were donated to the Library, and a set of 8 posters from the local ILO office. You are invited to view this exhibition.

Mrs Norma Amenu-Kpodo

The library profession, colleagues and friends congratulate the Librarian of the Year 2002, Mrs Norma Amenu-Kpodo, Deputy Librarian. She is the first professional to be given this recognition by the 52 year old Library and Information Association of Jamaica (LIAJA). In making the selection, LIAJA took into account Mrs. Amenu-Kpodo's sterling contribution to the University Library. Special mention was made of her enhancement of the student- centered library at the Mona Campus during her tenure as Acting Campus Librarian. Her initiatives included the creation of an audiovisual (AV) room, and the creative use of the limited library space to provide visually impaired and postgraduate students with their own reading rooms.

Mrs Amenu-Kpodo who was President of LIAJA in 1988, was also lauded for her dedicated and untiring service to that Association, to the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Round Table for the Management of Library Associations, as well as, the Commonwealth Library Association (COMLA). As the longest serving Executive Secretary of COMLA, she has spearheaded various workshops, seminars, and conferences regionally and locally. One such was the Conference of Special Librarianship in 1998. Its proceedings were published as a monograph entitled Special Librarianship in the Caribbean at the Threshold of the Millenium. As the only publication of its kind on Special Librarianship in the English-speaking Caribbean, it is required reading for students and practitioners in the field.

Librarian receives Central America/Caribbean Special Fulbright Fellowship

Miss Beverley Lashley, Librarian 111 and Project Coordinator of the Caribbean Disaster Information Network (CARDIN), is one of three Jamaicans selected for the prestigious Central America/Caribbean Special Fulbright Foreign Research Program. The Fulbright Scholar program is sponsored by the US Government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.

Ms Lashley will be based at the Cornell University, Olin Library from May to August 2003 and will be conducting research and preparing a paper entitled "The Development of a Cooperative Plan and Disaster Recovery Strategy for the Collections of Selected Research Libraries of the State of New York."

Librarian Gets US Award

Mrs Leona Bobb-Semple, Librarian 111 at the University Library has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Scholarship to attend the Preservation Management Institute at Rutgers University, School of Communication Information and Library Studies. She is required to attend three sessions at the University in the academic year 2002-2003, that is, October 2002, April 2003 and September 2003.

The sessions will include classroom learning, guided inter-workshop assignments, case studies and field trips that will focus on a range of preservation issues, technologies and management strategies that aim to contribute to the development and implementation of successful preservation programmes in our libraries.

Library Receives Gifts

"In the interest of friendship and scholarship", the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presented the Mona Library with a number of religious books including "Church History in the Fulness of Times, Why I Believe, Testimonies of Fifty Notable Latter-day Saints; a video entitled "How rare a Possession" with four compact discs featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Overnight Reading Room

The Library is pleased to announce that 20 workstations have been added to the overnight reading room. Access to workstations and printing is controlled by the Pharos system. You can activate your Pharos account during the Library's regular hours, either at RESU (9.00am - 4.00pm) or at the reference desk , Main Library when RESU is closed. You can access the INTERNET, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint and SPSS on these workstations.

New PostGraduate Reading Room

The Library wishes to inform you that a special area designated for registered postgraduate students is now available. The newly created postgraduate reading room is on the first floor of the Main Library, adjoining the World Bank Public Information Centre. Designated to accommodate individual study, as well as group work, it is equipped with six computers for Internet access and word processing; a small seminar-type table and flip chart, and a corner with lounge chairs for reading and relaxation.

Access to Computer Technology For Visually Impaired

The University Library is pleased to announce the expansion of services to its visually impaired users. A room in the Main Library, provided with two specially equipped workstations, has been set up for their use. Adaptive software, in the form of Kurzweil 1000 and Job Access with Speech (JAWS), allows visually impaired users to access printed and digital information. Kurzweil 1000 is an updated software programme that translates text to speech. It can scan and read pages as well as store text for subsequent retrieval or editing. JAWS is text-to-speech software that allows access to information on the Internet (including electronic books and the Library's online catalogue). In addition, JAWS can support MS Word and Duxbury BT (braille software).

The room is located on the ground floor of the Main Library and is accessible via the Mona Electronic and Information Centre (MERIC). Keys should be requested from a Reference Librarian at the Reference Inquiries Desk (Main Library).
