This section brings together a number of the Library's
special and unique research collections including the West
Indies Collection and the University
Collections. Material from this collection is not available
for loan outside of the section but has to be consulted in the
Elsa Goveia Reading Room which is equipped with
special facilities for reading microfilms and for consulting rare
materials. The west indies collections includes book from the
English speaking as well as Spanish French and dutch Caribbean
territories
The West Indies Collection consists
of smaller collections:
- Rare Book Collection: containing
old and rare books and pamphlets.
- Manuscript collections: including
diaries, estate journals, land transfers, letters, Ships' logs
on the West Indies, literary manuscripts
West Indian Creative writing (XX collection) : Anthologies,
novels, plays and poetry from the English-speaking Caribbean
retained in mint condition including autographed copies.
- Map collection: rare and twentieth
century maps
- Microform Collection: extensive
collection of official documents, manuscripts, periodicals and
newspapers.
Treasures from the Library which
are located in thes collection include:
- Literary manuscripts of West Indian
authors, of which the major holdings are the manuscripts
of Roger Mais, Jamaican novelist, journalist and critic. Others
writers represented include Michael Anthony, Wilson Harris,
Orlando Patterson and Derek Walcott, John Hearne, Erna Brodber
- Photographs of the University of the
West Indies including views from the 1950's which capture
and document its early history and development.
- Prints include Album Pintoresco
de la isla Cuba, a rare and valuable volume of coloured prints
depicting nineteenth century Cuba
University collection includes
- Monographs, articles written
or edited by University Staff.
- Publications by and about
the University including official reports, newsletters.
- Theses accepted by the University
for higher degrees,
- Photographic records of the
activities of the University at Mona
- Newspaper clippings and other
vertical file material
