The UWI's Mona GeoInformatics Institute wins Google Impact Award

The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI) at The University of the West Indies has won the prestigious Google Geo for Good Impact Award for 2023/2024. This international award is as a result of MGI's outstanding work on the project Implementation of Eco-System Adaptation Measures for Kingston Harbour Communities (KHEAM). MGI has been acknowledged for its innovative use of geospatial tools to generate impactful environmental and socioeconomic outcomes for marginalised communities around the Kingston Harbour.

Over $400,000 Canadian raised for UWI students at Annual Toronto benefit event

 
The 15th Annual University of West Indies Toronto Benefit Awards marked another successful year of fundraising supporting scholarships for Caribbean students on Saturday, April 20. Held at the elegant Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Toronto, Canada and hosted by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Anchor, Dr. Dwight Drummond, the gala event was at capacity with 450 guests from executive-level businesses, public personalities, and community leaders. Together, they raised over $400,000 Canadian in one night.

Paul Brown, professor of molecular biology at The UWI, Mona Campus, did not sound an alarm during his recent professorial lecture titled, "Genes and Shorts: lepto and other stories, through molecular lenses”.

Rather, Prof Brown, Head of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, calmly proffered research solutions that would make any forward-thinking decision-maker sit up and take notice.

The UWI and University of Glasgow partner to repatriate 170-year-old Jamaican Giant Galliwasp specimen

The UWI
The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the University of Glasgow (UofG) have announced the repatriation of a Jamaican Giant Galliwasp specimen from The Hunterian collection at UofG in Scotland, UK. The species of lizard, which is thought to have been collected in the 1850s and is presumed to be extinct, will return to its homeland, Jamaica. This repatriation exercise is momentous as it is the first repatriation of a natural history specimen in the Caribbean.

On Thursday (April 25), the Unions representing the academic, administrative and professional staff at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus signed off on a fifteen (15) percent interim wage agreement with the University’s management and witnessed by the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) represented by The Hon. Dr. Nigel Clarke, Minister of Finance and the Public Service and The Hon. Fayval Williams, Minister of Education and Youth.

The Most Honourable Dodridge D. Miller, FB, FCCA, MBA, LL.M, LLD (Hon) has been appointed as the 7th Chancellor—the highest office-holder in The University of the West Indies (The UWI) system. Now formally Chancellor-Designate, Dr Miller is expected to serve a seven-year term beginning August 1, 2024. He will succeed Robert Bermudez who has served as Chancellor since 2017.
