This is to advise that in order to maintain a safe living environment for our staff and students, persons wishing to reside in a hall of residence, including 138 Student Living facilities on the Mona Campus, must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

Members of the UWI-Mona Academic Community would have been aware of the advisory with respect to the suspension of teaching and learning activities for the rest of this week and the recommencement of face-to-face classes on Monday, November 3rd.
Update on Operations at the UWI-Mona – October 29, 2025
Further to our advisory of Sunday, October 26th, the Management of the Campus met today following a preliminary assessment of the impact of Hurricane Melissa. Following this assessment, we now advise the Campus Community that all operations of the Mona Campus will be suspended for the rest of this week, including teaching and learning activities, and assessments.
Updates on the Operations of the Mona Campus in Light of Hurricane Melissa
Further to the last advisory to the Campus Community on October 23, 2025, the Management Team of the Campus met today to further assess the situation with respect to the continued threat of Hurricane Melissa. The latest information from the Meteorological Office is that the island is already experiencing tropical storm conditions which is projected to evolve to hurricane like impact by tomorrow, with landfall in south-central Jamaica and the hurricane traversing the island from south to north on Tuesday.
Pivot to Full Online Operations – October 23 – 24, 2025
The Management of the Campus met this morning to assess the situation with respect to the approaching tropical storm. The island is now under a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch. Against this background, effective 2pm today, the Campus will pivot to full online operations.
Consequently, we are asking our Jamaican students on our halls of residence to immediately begin vacating the halls, given that physical operations on the Campus will be suspended. Regional and International students will remain on hall.
EARTHQUAKE ADVISORY

This morning, Friday, August 16, 2024, at 8:01 am EST, a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 was felt across Jamaica. According to the Earthquake Unit at The University of the West Indies, Mona, the epicentre was located approximately 6 km northeast of Golden Spring, St. Andrew, at a depth of 27 km.

As we approach a new academic year and with recent developments considered, The UWI would like to encourage everyone to be informed and prepared regarding the rising cases of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.

Reopening of the UWI Mona Campus
The University of the West Indies, Mona hopes all staff and students are safe after the passage of Hurricane Beryl. We take note of the discontinuation of the hurricane warning by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), and having done our own preliminary assessment, will reopen the Campus for normal operations on Friday, July 5, 2024.

Due to the impending threat of Hurricane Beryl, the Mona campus will be closed on Tuesday July 2, 2024 at 1pm and all day on Wednesday July 3, 2024. We will continue to take directives from The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) to update all key stakeholders.

The management of The UWI Mona Campus is continuing to closely monitor Hurricane Beryl and the possibility of it impacting Jamaica later this week. The Government of Jamaica has now issued a Hurricane Watch for the island.
